The mayor of Yukon says their food pantry is experiencing an influx of visitors, leading to an increase in spending and empty shelves.
Jacob’s Cupboard has been around for 13 years, and for the first time, had to close early because they had no perishable food items left.
With visitor numbers quadrupling, according to the food pantry, they had to turn to the Yukon community.
Yukon Mayor Shelli Selbi, a cofounder of Jacob’s Cupboard, said she used to spend a max of $400 on perishables every month, but recently that cost has jumped up to $1000.
Nonperishables typically lasting a month are now bought each week by the mayor herself.
“I may go to four different stores in one day just so I can get the best bang for our buck," Mayor Selbi said. "I want to make sure when people donate funds that everything goes to food we have no overheard no one gets paid everything goes totally to the people.”
Mayor Selbi said Jacob’s Cupboard can always use donations.
