A 10-year-old boy is in a medically-induced coma with burns on most of his body after his home caught fire in Oklahoma City. His grandmother, who he affectionally called "mom" because she adopted him, died in the blaze.
The fire happened at the family's home on Southwest 38th Street early Thursday morning. The Oklahoma City Fire Department said a woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Family identified the victim as Susan Trousdale.
Trousdale's grandson, 10-year-old Johnathan Hill, was critically injured, according to family. Johnathan Hill called Trousdale his mom because she adopted him - along with Johnathan Hill's 11-year-old sister, Kaelynn Hill- and raised them as her own.
"They were very, very close. Johnathan, the boy, he was a momma's boy and a daddy's boy," said Mary Newlon, Trousdale's great-niece. "Johnathan, I don't know if he woke up or just heard them, but he was trying to save his mom and that's how he got caught on fire."
The Fire Department said the 10-year-old boy was in critical condition. The family then told News 9 that he has burns on 90% of his body and is in a medically-induced coma.
"He was pronounced dead at the scene and they brought him back to life. So the doctor said he's not a pessimistic but right now, it's just not looking good," said Newlon. "Right now, we're all just praying and sticking together the best we can."
As for Johnathan Hill's older sister, Kaelynn Hill, she was not physically hurt because she escaped the fire and went to a neighbor for help. But she was affected emotionally.
"She's in shock, she's upset and she's scared. And she's been through a lot already, let's just say that, and now, on top of this, she's going to need therapy," said Newlon.
Meanwhile, Trousdale's husband, Wayne Hill, is recovering from a major spinal surgery and was at the hospital during the fire. To help cover the cost of Trousdale's funeral, as well as housing and other expenses for the family, Wayne Hill created a GoFundMe page. Click here to donate.
The Fire Department said Friday the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
