Tuesday morning, outside the speaker’s office, Rep. Kevin McCarthy made this historic announcement.
A decision he says he did not make lightly but which is the logical next step in the wake of a house oversight probe that, he says, shows clear evidence of corruption.
"That’s why today I am directing our house committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden," said Rep. Kevin McCarthy, (R) Speaker of the House.
McCarthy has been under pressure from the freedom caucus, both to hold the line on the spending cuts they want, and start an impeachment inquiry.
Justifying the latter today by saying the Biden has given hunter Biden favorable treatment and that the Biden family has profited from Hunter's foreign business dealings.
"We know that bank records show that nearly $20 million of payments were directed to the Biden family members and associates through various shell companies," said McCarthy. "I think the speaker has done a great job of actually letting this play out."
Congressman Kevin Hern says McCarthy might not have had to take this step is the white house hadn't refused to turn over documents to congress.
"And so now we have to take this next step to have the legal ability, sort of the meat, to go out and get these subpoenas answered," said Rep. Kevin Hern, (R-OK).
The white house slammed McCarthy, saying he caved to political pressure.
In addition, the white house and democrats are ripping McCarthy for unilaterally launching the inquiry, instead of through a vote on the house floor.
Something he stated just over a week ago he would not do.
