Two people were injured Monday night while taking cover from gunfire, however, they were not shot. Investigators are looking for a shooter and a driver who ran over a mother and her son as they hid from the gunfire.
A southeast Oklahoma City resident shot video of the commotion on his street. The video captured the panic after two people were run over by a fleeing car. One of the victims was carried from the street just before gunshots could be heard. Police were on the scene seconds after the gunfire broke out.
“They actually heard the gunshots being fired,” said Msgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department. “Officers were just a few blocks away. This was an area of Southeast 57th and Santa Fe.”
When police arrived, they described the scene as chaotic. People were running from the area and leaving in cars. Relatives of the injured victims said their brother and mother were hit by someone taking the woman's SUV. The 20-year-old victim had injuries to his face and body and the woman's lower body was injured.
“The driver pulled away very quickly,” said Knight. “Running over both of them leaving the scene.”
Police said the victims' injuries were non-life threatening and both were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Officers questioned the victims at the hospital to learn more about the shooting.
“It’s unclear what started the shooting,” said Knight. “We know there was a large group of people in the street that began arguing.”
Police said no one was hurt by gunfire only an SUV parked in a driveway was hit.
