A woman in a wheelchair is the Oklahoma City's latest fatal hit and run victim. Police said the woman was hit late Monday night by three different vehicles in northwest Oklahoma City before she was taken to the hospital. Investigators believe the victim was homeless. They have not identified her or the hit-and-run driver.
“It appears it was a female in a wheelchair who ended up being hit three times by vehicles,” said Msgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department.
The wheelchair bound woman was crossing Portland Avenue near Northwest 33rd Street when, police said, a driver hit her. The impact knocked the woman out of the wheelchair and the driver fled the scene.
“She was hit the first time, she was in the northbound lane and a northbound vehicle hit her,” said Knight. “Knocked her into the southbound lanes where she was hit a second time.”
The second driver stopped. Police said the person discovered the fatally injured woman in the road and called 911. During that time, a third driver hit the victim. Police said that person did not stop.
“A very tragic situation,” said Knight. “She was transported to an area hospital where she passed away as a result of her injuries.”
Police taped off a section of Portland Avenue for several hours to investigate. They were only able to speak to one driver but need to identify the other drivers to solve the deadly crash.
“We want to talk to everyone involved,” said Knight.
Citizens who witnessed the crash or have information that could help the investigation are urged to call the Crime Stoppers tip line at (405) 235-7300.
