Josh McConnell learned 5 months ago he had been overpaid by $5,000 from social security since 2016.

But as caseworkers investigate, he's living off of the generosity of others.

The 39-year-old has received social security disability benefits for the majority of his life.

The Social Security Administration has not yet responded to our questions about McConnell's case.

He said he tried to fix the issue, but he was eventually fired from his job for -- admittedly -- missing too much work to go to the social security office.

McConnell isn't the only one being asked to give back money.

The issue is widespread enough that the Social Security Administration recently put this blog on its website about people who discover they've been overpaid.

McConnell said he's working with a case manager to appeal -- but so far, no success.

The latest email suggested he might start receiving payments again soon.

In another email -- his case manager claimed the issue was self-inflicted for working too much.

Typically working more means earning less from Social Security- but McConnell says he had no idea there was a problem.
