The Oklahoma City Thunder are always in the community giving back. But today they showed up at the Rockwell YMCA to give back and got challenged a little bit.
“We are bringing a couple of our Thunder Girls and our O City Crew members to be a part of the gold Zumba class,” said Jennifer Watson, community engagement and outreach manager for the Thunder.
As participants came to class, there was a little confusion over the visitors. “I heard that you guys do an amazing gold Zumba class, and we wanted to be a part of that today,” said Watson.
The guests were embraced, but this class wasn’t going to be easy. “It was my first time to ever partake in a Zumba class, and as a professional dancer, even I was challenged,” said OKC Thunder Girl Ashley.
Even though it’s a gold class, meant for seniors, these ladies were moving. “Zumba gold was a ton of fun, I was a little worried, it was my first class, but they made it really easy for everyone,” said Zumba class participant Sarah Weaver.
Of course, the Thunder crew never comes empty handed. “We are actually able to contribute part of a new sound system, which is about twelve years old currently, that we are going to be replacing. Besides the sound system we are able to provide some goodies here,” said Watson.
They came loaded with yoga mats, exercise balls, resistance bands and more.
“Having the Thunder come out and donating equipment to our class, the big one is helping replace the sound system that is twelve years old, so that is a huge upgrade to this class,” said Taylor York, district executive director for the YMCA.
A day they all will remember.
“It was really cool to do that with the Thunder girls,” said Weaver. “I will say, I was a little humbled, it was challenging, but it was a fun challenge and something I look forward to hopefully doing again,” said Ashley.
