One person is dead after Oklahoma City Police said they barricaded themselves inside an Oklahoma City motel Monday morning.

Oklahoma City Police said the department responded shortly before 4 a.m. to a motel near Meridian Avenue and Southwest 3rd Street

Oklahoma City Police said the suspect died by suicide. Before he took his life, officers were able to talk to him. He told them he was not going back to jail.

Oklahoma City police said this all started as a pursuit on Saturday.

“A suspect fled the scene. Officers were able to identify him, but he fled the traffic stop,” Msgt. Gary Knight said.

Early Monday morning, officers spotted the suspect's car again at Howard Johnson Hotel on Meridian. This time they were able to speak with him.

“We actually spoke to the suspect through a closed door. He indicated he was armed and was not coming out,” Msgt. Knight said.

Police are not releasing the person's name yet, but they said the suspect did have a felony warrant out of Custer County.

After speaking to them, they heard gunshots and called in the tactical unit and negotiators.

“At that point it becomes a waiting game,” Msgt. Knight said.

Someone that lives nearby who wants to stay anonymous said all of the commotion woke her up.

“I think this is the beginning of a challenging week,” the neighbor said.

Police said the standoff lasted for several hours and they evacuated the hotel.

“There was more gunfire and a single shot, and they did not hear the suspect talking or making any noise after that,” Msgt. Knight said.

“The smell was something you'll never forget. It's gunpowder, and blood and feces,” the neighbor said.

Officers went into the room after the gunfire stopped.

“I don't know what they had hooked to it, but when he left it was a mess. It was a mess,” the neighbor said.

They said he wasn't shooting at police, but within his hotel room.

“It appeared he had shot and killed the dog and then shot and killed himself,” Msgt. Knight said.

“It's not a good area. It doesn't make for very good neighbors,” the neighbor said.
