The Oklahoma City Thunder has planned to honor Native American Heritage Month through in-game events.
The Thunder is hosting Native American Student Day on November 6, which will include presentations, activities and stickball. More that 1,100 students from across the state are expected to attend. Students will also receive a ticket to that night's game.
The Thunder is hosting Native American Heritage Celebration Night during their game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. There will be Native American performances, a Grandma Turtle display and the national anthem will be performed by Native American Music Award winner Ava Rose Johnson
The Thunder is also holding a basketball camp with the Choctaw Nation in Durant on November 20.
“The Thunder is proud to celebrate the rich history of Native American people and culture in Oklahoma,” said Natasha Stamper, vice president of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “We want to continually teach, honor and build relationships with those around us, not just during this special month, but all year long. It’s more than just the understanding of how historic events have shaped our landscape; it’s about how we can continue to honor the traditions and find ways for those traditions to be present in the next generation to come.”
