A good Samaritan rescued four people after their car ran off a road in Caddo County and caught fire.
Cord Coffey, 26, said he was driving with his dog Saturday afternoon near Binger when another vehicle crossed into the wrong lane, causing the car in front of Coffey to swerve, run off the road, and land on its side in a wooded ravine. Inside the wrecked car were four people: Berdina Kodaseet, her 10-year-old granddaughter, Brooklynn "Beans" Kodaseet, and two men who are Berdina's friends. "I'm surprised I didn't die because it was so fast," recalled Berdina Kodaseet.
Coffey said once he called 911, he rushed to the crash site. "I just started screaming, 'Hello, is anyone there?'" Coffey said.
Coffey said he saw one of the men trying to go up the slippery embankment, so he pulled the victim all the way up and laid him in a flat grassy area. Coffey then realized there were three more victims down in the ravine. "By the time I got back down, I started to smell gas," Coffey recalled. "So I instructed the grandma and the granddaughter who were still up and pretty healthy to get as far away from the car as they possibly could."
Coffey said after he carried the other male victim up the embankment, the car caught fire. By that time, Berdina and Beans Kodaseet had already moved away from the car but were still trapped in the ravine. Coffey then went down the ravine a third time to help pull Beans Kodaseet out. "I said, 'Do you trust me?' And she said, 'Yes, I do.' So I went down and I grabbed Beans," said Coffey.
Once Beans Kodaseet was safe, Coffey returned to the bottom of the ravine a fourth time to try to rescue Berdina Kodaseet. "And I made it a quarter way up. The fire was spreading, it was getting real hot down there," Berdina Kodaseet said. "He ended up telling me to just go into that cement thing and rollover. And I just waited in there until the Binger, Cogar, and Anadarko Fire Departments came and got me on a gurney and pulled me out."
Berdina Kodaseet said she suffered a seat burn and bruises while her granddaughter suffered cuts on her leg from glass. Meanwhile, the two men in the car suffered facial and shoulder injuries. While Berdina and Beans Kodaseet recover, they got a chance to Facetime with Coffey on Tuesday. "I just wanted to thank you guys for trusting me to get you out of there," Coffey told them. "If it wasn't for you, it would have ended up a whole 'nother way," replied Berdina Kodaseet. " I'll look for you on Facebook and we could meet up, you know, go to Union City, go get a hamburger over at Dairy Mart!"
In a Facebook post, the Binger Volunteer Fire Department commended Coffey for his "selfless act of heroism."
