A viewer tells News 9 they're experiencing extreme nausea, and says medications don't seem to help. Dr. Lacey Anderson discusses different causes and solutions to nausea.
There are several medications that can help with nausea such as Zofran or Phenergan, but finding the cause of the nausea can help tremendously in finding a cure, according to Dr. Anderson. Some medications can cause nausea including narcotic pain medications, anti-inflammatory pain medications and antibiotics.
Sometimes a problem with the stomach itself can cause nausea, according to Dr. Anderson. Acute gastritis which is an inflammation of the stomach lining can cause severe nausea and upper abdominal pain and is usually treated with acid reflux medications and carafate, a medication that coats the stomach. Liquid antacid medications like Gaviscon or Mylanta can also help quite a bit with nausea caused by a gastritis.
Sometimes there is a problem with stomach mobility, such as diabetic gastroparesis, where the stomach can’t empty normally, Dr. Anderson says. Sometimes a bacterial infection called H. Pylori can cause nausea and ulcer symptoms in the stomach and is treated with antibiotics and reflux medications. If symptoms aren’t improving, be sure to call your doctor for further care.
