Thousands Of Oklahoma Families Receive Holiday Meals Thanks To Food Bank

The Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma says our state is one of the most food-insecure states in the country.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, having enough food is top of mind this holiday season.

The Food Bank has closed off registrations for its annual Thanksgiving Meal Distribution, with the expectation that it will hand out over 3,500 boxes of food to families in need for Thanksgiving.

The Food Bank will be giving out a turkey and all of the fixings.

Joy Ferrin with The Food Bank said they typically see more families in need of food during the holidays.

She said they’ve also seen an increase in people needing help overall because of the spike in the cost of groceries.

Ferrin said The Food Bank is happy to serve where they can.

"I think the holidays are a really special time in which people come together with families. And so we want to make sure that food is a part of that and that people are able to come together around a meal. So it's really important to make sure that we are fighting food insecurity, especially around the time of the holidays," Ferrin said.

The Food Bank said registration for the meals is full and they plan to hand everything out on November 13.

It will be handing out food at four different locations throughout the Tulsa area. These locations include St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Tulsa Community College West Campus, Tulsa Tech Riverside, and Vernon AME Church.

You must have signed up with The Food Bank in order to get one of these Thanksgiving food boxes.

If you were unable to register for a Thanksgiving box, you can register for The Food Bank's monthly distribution on November 16.

The Food Bank also has a pantry finder where anyone can put in their ZIP code and find one of its partner pantries to get food throughout the year.
