The Oklahoma County Detention Center is preparing for a new program.
“This is something I really have passion about,” Lt. Crystal Ross said.
Lt. Ross used to be the Jail CEO's assistant, but she's taking on a new role as lieutenant over program services with the Community Assistance Resource & Empowerment Unit.
When people are released from jail, they will have to walk by her office, which will put people in place with resources to help them get back on their feet. Some of the resources are access to healthcare, food pantries, and job training programs.
The detention center hopes this will help put people in a better position to not end up behind bars again. Communications Director Mark Opgrande says the program also creates a connection between families and inmates.
“My loved one needs, I think they need medical attention, or who do I contact about getting a lawyer for them. What we can do is then hook up those resources,” Opgrande said.
The goal of the program is to give reassurance to families.
“It's all about making it easier to let their family know that there is a way to contact there is a way to get help,” Opgrande said.
They said it's hard work, but it's worth it. Ross said she left the Cleveland County Detention Center to work in Oklahoma County for opportunities like this.
“It is a tough job. You see a lot of heartening things, but if you can come in and actually make a difference and do what you can to even help one person,” Ross said.
