State Superintendent Ryan Walters announced through a press release Monday that he is starting a tutoring program for Oklahoma students.
According to the press release, the plan relies on recruiting community volunteers to tutor in elementary schools. Volunteers can submit their application here, and applicants will be vetted by districts.
Varsity Tutors for Schools, a virtual tutoring website, will also be available to students as a 24/7 tutoring option. The release states this tutoring is available to all Oklahoma students for free for the next two years, at no cost to the taxpayers.
The press release also states that, starting in January, OSDE will be starting a program that pays teachers $50 per hour for tutoring. The press release says this program will focus on 4th grade students at low-performing sites, and that it will last 15 weeks.
“I’m proud to roll out the most far-reaching tutoring program in the country to benefit Oklahoma kids,” said Walters. “We want to leverage the power of our communities to make sure our students get the help they need to improve literacy and spark a lifelong connection between community groups and their local schools.”
