Choctaw Nation: Marvel Studios Went "Above And Beyond" In New Series "Echo"

The Choctaw Nation worked with Marvel for a new streaming series called "Echo." 

The superhero series follows a Choctaw woman as she learns about her ancestors and her past. The Choctaw Nation says about 200 tribal members were involved in helping Marvel with the series, with everything from costumes to language.

The five-part series "Echo" is coming to the streaming world after two years in the making. Choctaw Nation Executive Director of Culture Seth Fairchild has been involved since the beginning.  

"They went above and beyond to make sure that we had as many Choctaw artists and consultants involved as possible,” he said of Marvel Studios.  

The Marvel series follows the character Maya Lopez. While Fairchild said the series was filmed in Georgia, the story is about Maya's return to Oklahoma.  

"It's her coming back from the city and learning where she's from, learning about her people, learning about her ancestors. And how her ancestors echo through time to help her today,” Fairchild said.  

Her character is deaf and has a prosthetic leg. So does the actress, Alaqua Cox, in real life. 

"And for her to be Native American, and to be able to play that, and bring this role to life. It was -- You couldn't make that up. It is really something special,” he said.  

Fairchild said he was there for a lot of the filming, where his favorite memories were made off-screen.  

"I sat on set with some of our elders, you know, they'll be 70, 80 plus years old,” Fairchild said. “And to see their eyes light up when they saw the scale of what was happening and the pride and the honor that they felt to see their culture come to life on that level and to be done the right way, was so exciting for them. So as exciting as it was for me, probably my favorite part was watching some of those older tribal members getting to see this come to life."  

The series will be released on Disney+ and Hulu on Tuesday.
