As cold weather approaches, maintenance companies are giving advice to business owners on how to prepare for subzero temps.
Every winter, freezing temperatures wreak havoc on heating and cooling systems or pipes inside businesses, but technicians say there are simple measures that can be taken to prevent disaster.
Folks at Jackson Mechanical Services are gearing up for a long weekend of service calls.
"We see a lot of calls in the winter time when temperatures dip down like they're talking," said Operations Manager Travis Fuksuh.
Fuksuh says planning ahead is important. He says property owners should give their buildings a once-over to make sure everything is in working order. That means checking things like air filters and making sure you know where water shut-off valves are.
"A big thing that's gonna help you if you have a failure is to be able to get that shut off as soon as possible so if you can find the shut-off valves and know where they're at, know where they're located, you can at least get there and get the water to stop," he said.
Fuksuh says people should also insulate any exposed pipes to keep them from freezing over and bursting, leading to costly damage.
Technicians also recommend having a number ready to call before something goes wrong so you're not scrambling last minute.
