Noise Town is a creative space in West Tulsa that has become a musician's ultimate dream. Mike Rodriguez, co-owner of Noise Town, joined us on the Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to share more.
"It started out emphasizing on rehearsal spaces for musicians, because there's so much music in Tulsa. And we also wanted to provide private instruction for younger students. And that kind of expanded also into recording facilities. And then, basically, as we're divvying out our week, we're like, 'well, we expect bands at this time. We can have students at this time,' you know. 'What do we do on Friday night, Saturday nights?' And so we branched out into an all-ages venue, occasionally, a few times a month. And so we're actually able to watch, it's just started, we're only five months old. But we're able to see these kind of development where we meet kids at the beginning of their music journey. And we can kind of facilitate their growth. We can provide them resources. We can provide them with a place to perform and record. And we're part of that entire journey for some of these younger artists, which is really exciting," Rodriguez said.
"We opened the space, and we kind of knew what we were doing. And we kind of didn't. And I had a good friend advise me that you're going to have a certain idea of what your business is going to be. And then there's going to be people that show up and that want to invest or inhabit that space. And they're actually going to tell you what you are. And so we found ourselves conducting comedy, open mic poetry nights, we did a music market for the community. So sometimes we'll just have people approach us with this fully conceived idea. And they'll say, 'how is Friday, next month for you? Is that available?' And we'll look and we'll say, 'we can completely facilitate that event.' Like let's do it. And it's been really exciting because the pressure isn't always on us to come up with events. And you know, and call all of our friends and say, 'what should we do? What should we do?' The community comes up to us and they say, 'hey, we heard you have a space.' It's a music space, but it's also a creative space. And, 'could we potentially partner with you on this?' And so every month since we started in August, I feel like we've done at least one event that's kind of expanding our community and expanding the resources that we offer. And yeah, and it's just, I'm really looking forward to 2024," Rodriguez said.
"It's a free workshop. It's for beginner guitar players. It's called, 'I got a guitar for Christmas. What do I do now?' So it's for people that want to learn how to clean and maintain, restring, tune, stretch their guitars. It's completely free. It's co-hosted with the Tulsa Guitar Repair. So we'll have a licensed luthier there. Bring your guitar if you have problems with your guitar. Contact us for space to RSVP. And we're also offering restringing service where we'll help you restring your guitar and kind of help you through the process for $10. So just let us know if that's something that you want to do," Rodriguez said.
