Downtown Tulsa Partnership Begins Outreach To Support People Experiencing Homelessness

The Downtown Tulsa Partnership has a new outreach pilot program the group said will help those experiencing homelessness in the downtown area.

The Downtown Tulsa Partnership said it saw a need in downtown for a more strategic plan for those experiencing homelessness and problems with their mental health.

The 2023 'Point in Time Count' found more than 1,100 people experienced homelessness in Tulsa last year.

CEO Brian Kurtz said the outreach pilot program launched last fall and is funded by Ascension St. John Medical Center.

Kurtz said the goal is to decrease the number of people who are homeless by providing shelter, necessities, and rehabilitation services.

Kurtz said a new outreach coordinator was hired to check on the homeless community and to be there for when they want to take the next steps.

“This a new venture for us and that’s why we’re calling it a pilot. Because this is something that is new to us and we’re testing the waters. But Toni has been fantastic and building relationships with service providers in the continue of care,” Kurtz said.

Kurtz said this program is unique because the partnership wants to create a personal relationship with their clients, which takes a lot of compassion and patience.
