A Tulsa martial arts school is starting a series of self-defense classes geared toward women.
The classes, called "Surviving a Violent Attack for Women," are held at Sheepdog Jiu-Jitsu once a month.
Owner and Head Instructor Blake Hayes said a violent attack is not something a person can predict but is something victims can survive.
"We focus on what do I do in the worst-case scenario, how do I get away, and how do I protect myself and my children," he said.
Hayes has been teaching the martial art form in Tulsa for almost 20 years. His assistant instructor, Jennifer Frederick, also has more than a decade under her belt.
"I enjoy the technique; I enjoy defending myself and teaching other women how to defend themselves," she said.
The new series of classes is open to all women.
"This class is for all women, all shapes, all sizes. We are looking to help everyone," Frederick added.
It starts with a discussion about common attacks women encounter in their everyday lives. Then, the ladies will hit the mat to learn how to avoid attacks, de-escalate them when they occur, and react with force if necessary to create space and get away safely.
"You just need to survive; you need to make space, get to a safe place, do not get taken to a secondary location, and live to see your family," said Hayes.
The next "Surviving a Violent Attack for Women" class is Saturday, March 2nd, from 2-3:30 p.m. Tickets for the class are $35 and can be purchased here.
