Three have people died, including an unborn baby, after a crash involving a Tulsa fire truck, The Tulsa Police Department said.
There were six people in the car, three adults and three children at the time of the crash, police said.
A 23-year-old female passenger and a 5-year-old female passenger died from their injuries at the hospital. Police also said that a 26-year-old passenger was in her second trimester and miscarried the baby.
The 28-year-old female driver, a 1-and-a-half-year-old male, and a 4-year-old female were also in the vehicle, according to a police report. All of them are still in the hospital undergoing treatment.
The driver of a car turned in front of a fire truck that had its lights and sirens going on 41st Street, between Harvard and Yale, police said.
The crash happened early Monday night near 41st Street and New Haven Ave when the Tulsa fire truck was responding to reports of a building fire.
Tulsa Fire Department Public Information Officer Andy Little said the firetruck was running lights and sirens while passing through the intersection. According to Tulsa Police, that was when a white Hyundai turned south onto New Haven Ave. and the firetruck collided with the passenger vehicle.
The collision sent the car over a sidewalk and into a telephone pole. Police said that the firefighters from the truck were not injured and immediately started to render life-saving measures to the occupants of the car.
Little said first responders reacted quickly, using extrication equipment to free the trapped occupants from the vehicle. Charolette Lizar witnessed the aftermath and says nearby neighbors started working on the victims right away - and the scene was unforgettable.
“Just seeing the little toy dog, a stuffed dog laying in the middle of the street, and knowing the family had been trapped in the car and some had been thrown out; it was just very sad,” Lizar said.
