A nonprofit that helps support local veterans in Tulsa said there is a big need for volunteers.

Disabled American Veterans is an organization that supports ill and injured veterans after they have returned home from service.

There are 30 Disabled American Veterans chapters across Oklahoma and the Tulsa chapter is located inside The Ernest Childers VA Outpatient Clinic.

DAV Tulsa is currently seeking volunteers to fill positions for its driving program. It involves picking up veterans and driving them to their various medical appointments.

You don't have to be a veteran to be a driver. All you need is a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and you must pass a physical.

Danny Oliver with DAV said this program is critical for the veterans they serve.

"Our biggest goal is to recruit enough drivers so every veteran with a medical need is taken care of. And right now it can't be done," said Oliver.

Leaders said DAV is flexible and will accept volunteers at their convenience, but said consistent shifts are necessary for the program to run smoothly.

DAV is also looking for volunteers to assist with its outpatient clinic. You can call 918-232-2750 to learn more about volunteer opportunities.
