The longest-running American musical, "Chicago," is back on the Civic Center Music Hall stage in Oklahoma City.
News 9's Jordan Ryan took the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to the Civic Center to talk to Katie Frieden, who graduated from Oklahoma City University and stars as Roxie Hart.
Frieden said the appeal of 'Chicago' over the past 27 years can be attributed to its timeless theme, a story that resonates with audiences of all generations.
"It's all about the relationship between the media and celebrities and that fleeting fame. In the 1920s, 100 years ago, it was with newspapers, and today, it's social media, and no matter if it's the seventies or whenever, it always remains relevant," Frieden said.
She said playing Roxie has been a huge blessing to her and she loves being able to tell her story.
"She does a lot of evil to get what she wants, but it's not about being evil for her. It's about achieving her dream and it's about doing what she has to do to get to the top, and I think we all relate to that in some ways," Frieden said.
While the show is in town, Frieden has been teaching classes at OCU for students. She said she always wanted to do that when she was a student.
I remember alumni used to come through on tour, performing at the Civic Center, and would teach classes, and I always said I wanna do that," Frieden said. "It really is a dream come true in a very full circle moment to be here and doing that."
"Chicago" will be at the Civic Center from April 10 to April 14.
