Norman’s first annual Native Plant Festival is being held this weekend, April 13.

Bill Farris with the Oklahoma Native Plant Network joined News 9 on the Arca Continental Southwest Beverages Porch to talk about the importance of native plants.

“The native plants are the ones that have been here for thousands of years are adapted to live here in Oklahoma's climate,” Farris said. “They are also the beneficial plants for all of your pollinators, whether the bees, monarch butterflies or all the butterflies, songbirds, hummingbirds, those species are not adapted to the introduced plants that come from other continents.”

According to Farris, the monarch butterfly has declined by 58 percent compared to last year.

“We’re trying to put the word out for people to plant species plants that the monarchs are adapted to,” Farris said.

Because native plants are made for Oklahoma, care and keeping of these plants can be easier, according to Farris.

The festival is being held at STASH on Norman’s Main Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
