One person is dead after a stabbing in Woodward Wednesday night, police say.

According to Woodward police, officers were dispatched to the High Plains Outreach Center near Webster Avenue around 7:50 p.m. on Wednesday to reports of a stabbing.

Police discovered that 39-year-old Lance William Beierschmit and 24-year-old Fernando Alonso Chavez had an altercation, in which police say Chavez attacked Beierschmitt with a machete.

Both individuals were residents at the facility, according to police.

Chavez was booked into the Woodward County Jail on an initial charge of second-degree murder, according to police's release.

"On 04/10/2024 at approx. 7:50 pm Woodward Police Officers were dispatched to the High Plains Outreach Center, located in the 1600 blk. of Webster Ave. in reference to a stabbing.
Lance William Beierschmitt, 39 and Fernando Alonso Chavez, 24, both residents of the facility, had an altercation which culminated in Chavez allegedly attacking Beierschmitt with a machete.
Beierschmitt was transported to Integris Health Woodward, where he succumbed to his injuries and died.
Chavez has been booked into the Woodward County Jail on an initial charge of second degree murder."
