As Oklahoma City prepares for the Memorial Marathon, a longtime runner is going for a three-peat win in the 5K this year.
Luis Chavez is no stranger to marathon weekend, and with every event under his belt and a few medals to go along with them, he said he is ready to break through that 5K finish line for a third-straight time.
Chavez, hailing from northwestern Oklahoma, said he has been Running to Remember for a decade, and after the 5K event on Saturday, is turning around and running the full marathon on Sunday.
Chavez said the encouraging atmosphere means everything.
"It can get lonely out there, but just knowing that you have every neighborhood and people just cheering you on," Chavez said. "Being able to finish seeing those 168 banners at the end is great."
Chavez is also an Oklahoma City metro running coach, with several adults and children running in different events this weekend.
