A Mustang woman says she was mauled by a dog while bicycling on a country road in Canadian County.
Oklahoma City police say it happened along Richland Road near Northwest 10th Street on Monday just after 4 p.m. when a large dog knocked her off her bike and attacked her.
Police say when officers arrived, the dog was gone but luckily Suzanne McCoy got away but not before the dog took a bite out of her leg.
“Everything happened so fast,” McCoy said. “I was scared for my life.”
McCoy was riding her bicycle along Richard Road when she said she saw a large brownish mixed-breed dog out of the corner of her eye. “It didn't really give me a warning,” she said. “It didn't bark at me, it just came at me burling at me and the next thing I know it just lunged up at my leg latched into me.”
McCoy said she went into survival mode. “It was pure adrenaline,” she said. “My body kicked in; it was like I’m not going to go down without a fight I’m gonna make it.”
She did make it, to a fence in front of a home, where police say the woman who lives there called 911. McCoy said the woman helped her over the fence, but the dog was gone. “Next thing I knew I had a gaping hole in my leg,” she said.
McCoy said she had eight stitches and is still in pain. And with the dog still out there, wants to warn others. “In my situation, I was able to get away from it, a child couldn't have,” she said.
Police say one bystander showed them where they believe the dog lives. According to a police report, the owner of that property told police they have approximately nine dogs on the property, two that like to wander from the front yard which is not secured by a gate. However, the report shows the dog the bystander mentioned was friendly towards him.
While police have not identified the dog responsible for McCoy’s attack, she says she’s not afraid to get back out there. “It didn't sever any muscle which is a great thing, and it didn't break a bone so I’m going to be up and running, biking again before long,” she said. “I'm bound and determined.”
McCoy says she plans to carry mace next time she goes bicycling or running and encourages others to do the same.
