A community near and far is rallying to support a Sulphur woman who lost her home and a portion of her leg in Saturday's tornado.
Friends of Elaine Guilloz said she has been a prominent member of the deaf community for many years, and the martial arts community.
"Sometimes there are things that happen to us like that, that are just unfortunate," said TJ Anderson, a friend of Guilloz and her Karate teacher. "It's sad."
In a video recorded by Anderson, Guilloz recalled the tornado from her hospital bed.
"I was trying to make a split-second dash to go back to my house," she said.
With a medical recovery still ahead, and having lost most of her belongings, Guilloz's friends have started a GoFundMe to help her move forward.
"She didn't think she could have survived that had she not been doing karate, because she was able to endure that scariness that roar of the tornado trying to suck her up," Anderson said.
"But in her mind, she kept using that technique to try to battle with the tornado. And I was like, 'Wow.'"
