The man accused of murdering Daniel Howard on New Year's Day 2023 entered a plea deal in court Wednesday.
27-year-old Khalil Warren is accused of murdering Daniel Howard and injuring four others.
The Howard family says there is no time to grieve as they're fighting for justice for their son.
"We have no justice. We have no voice as a victim parent," said Stephanie Howard, Daniel's mom.
The district attorney sat inside the courtroom, agreeing to a plea deal with Warrens' attorneys. Warren was originally charged with first-degree murder, but in this deal, he'll be agreeing to a conviction of second-degree.
"He has a good lawyer. Money talks," said Howard.
Howard's son was shot outside of the now-closed Sunset Bar on January 1st, 2023. She claims her son had no idea who Warren was and is innocent; something Warren's attorneys disagree with.
"It is at that point that Daniel Howard approaches, has a gun in his waist, and is reaching for it, and Khalil Warren acted in self-defense," said Annie Ruttkay, Warren's Attorney.
Warren's attorneys say a gun was found a few feet away from Howard's body in the parking lot. It was not registered under Howard’s name.
"The problem is there is another witness that says he was looking for a gun inside the club," said Warren's Attorney Marco Palumbo.
On May 30th, Warren will be sentenced. The DA is recommending to the judge no less than 30 years. Howard's family says they are writing letters asking for Warren's sentence to be longer.
