After weeks of deliberation, the House and Senate have agreed on a state budget for the 2025 fiscal year.
The budget is set at $12.47 billion, a $700 million decrease from last year’s budget. One of the Senate’s goals during this year’s negotiations was to put $1 billion into savings.
The budget negotiations ended suddenly last week after what seemed like stalemate after stalemate. The governor told the committee Tuesday that if they could agree on the budget that day, he would not veto it. It took less than four hours for negotiations to end.
A big priority for the Senate this year was an emphasis on transparency. There were a total of eight budget summits between the House, Senate and governor.
The budget still has to be passed. This will happen after the Joint Committee on Appropriations meets and looks over the plans.
After the budget passes out of committee, it will move to the House and Senate for approval, and then to the governor’s desk. The budget is supposed to make it to the governor’s desk by Friday.
