3 Arrested In Guthrie For Abandoning 30 Cats, Local Organization Asks For Help

The Logan County Sheriff's Office arrested three people accused of dumping over 30 cats on the side of the road in Guthrie.

Those cats are now in the care of a spay and neuter group.

A Logan County Sheriff's deputy discovered the family of cats Monday night near Industrial Road, still in their kennels. 

The owner of Helping Community Paws and Claws says the kitties need the community's help. “We can’t be doing this. There are other options,” Lisa New said. 

She is now caring for the abandoned cats. “I don’t take surrenders, we’re not a shelter, what am I going to do with 30 cats?” she said. 

New’s organization spays and neuters animals in Logan County for free to help control the rampant cat population. “That one mama kitty produced that many offspring, and then them being pregnant and having more offspring, in one year,” she said, describing how the litter of 30 came to be. 

The growing family overwhelmed the people caring for the cats, according to Major Greg Randolph with the Logan County Sheriff's Office.

“They’re stating they didn’t have the means to take care of the cats any longer and they thought that what they were doing was the proper thing to do to get them care,” Major Greg Randolph with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office said. 

Brook, Jason, and Keegan Wanzer were arrested Tuesday in connection to dumping and abusing the cats, which carries a felony charge. 

Randolph says there are better options to consider, like HCPC's services. “That’s why I’m so heartbroken because I work so hard to prevent this and then I’m the one left cleaning up the mess,” New said. 

New wants this to be a wake-up call to pet owners and those who care for strays.

“I’m begging please fix your animals,” she said.
