Two teens were hit by a car in Spencer while riding a horse on the side of the road in May.

Now they hope that sharing their story gives others a word of warning.

News 9's Cameron Joiner spoke with one of the teens who says he's lucky to be alive.

63rd Street in Spencer is lined with trees over rolling hills.

"They tend to usually go slow knowing that horses come through here running or riding and all that good stuff," said Julius Rideaux

Rideaux is not the first and not the last horseback rider to use these roads to get around.

"I want to say this is the fastest easiest way back to the house because it's just a straight shot up to the fire station," said Rideaux.

He was riding on 63rd Street with a family friend. "I turned around and I saw the car and the bright lights and I was like they're not slowing down," Rideaux said.

The car struck Rideaux's horse, throwing him and the other rider into the air-- and his horse through the windshield, killing it.

"With my horse's legs in the car and I was riding on his butt, I'm confused how I didn't get snatched up with the car," said Rideaux.

"How am I still alive," questioned Rideaux.

According to the accident report the driver claimed she was going 45 miles per hour and 'Couldn't stop fast enough.’

"There's no way you're going 45 and split a full-grown horse in half. And he's muscular, he's fat," Rideaux said.

Rideaux says it's a miracle both teens only have some scratches and road rash, "I'm blessed to be walking from it, that's all I can say."

Physically okay, but still heartbroken.

"I've never had a horse better than that. That was probably the best horse I will probably ever get," Rideaux said.
