As the summer travel season begins, thieves can view summer vacations as an opportunity to strike.

News 9 spoke with Oklahoma City Police Chief Wade Gourley about how homeowners and families can keep their homes safe and secure during the busy summer travel season.

"The biggest things (are that they) look for signs that someone's not home, whether it's the mail backing up or things like lights not coming on in the house in the evening, and also to social media. They look on social media and see if people are posting about being away," Gourley said.

The chief also suggested ways to further secure your home during vacation, including:

  1. Parking in the driveway
  2. Lock garage doors
  3. Don't leave spare keys outdoors
  4. Install exterior lighting around your home
