The Oklahoma Cowboys Foundation is hosting a summer camp in Jones this year for kids to get engaged and educated on the life of being a cowboy, sat down with News 9 and the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to dive into what the camp offers to kids all across the Oklahoma City metro.
The summer camp focuses on the black history of being a cowboy, from horsemanship skills to teamwork; the Oklahoma Cowboys youth summer camp will provide activities for all of the things associated with rodeo life.
Camp Director Chloe Flowers and Camp Coach Damon Hopkins spoke about how the camp can teach kids aged six to 14 about the daily duties of rodeo life.
"The Oklahoma Cowboys camp has a curriculum that focuses on the black history of being a cowboy, it focuses on horsemanship skills, it focuses on group work and working together," Flowers said.
"The kids should learn pretty much basic horsemanship; we're going to teach them how to groom a horse, showing the different parts of a horse, show them how to clean out horses hooves, show him how to saddle horses, you know the basics of riding," Hopkins said.
The summer camp kicks off in June and will be held at Wild Horse Arena in Jones, located at 8014 North Post Road.
