For Pride Month this June, a brand new salon in the Plaza District is making it their mission to bring inclusive haircut services to OKC.
“I want to make an inclusive space for everyone,” Code.Micro Salon owner, Ashton Colley, said. “We have a non-gendered service menu so all of our haircut prices are just based by the actual service like hourly or by the time it takes us.”
Colley says his salon won't charge based on the person getting the haircut.
“Sometimes they can take the same amount of time as a women’s haircut but women’s haircuts can cost sometimes double the price of men’s haircuts,” he said.
And he says a good haircut can be transformative for some people.
“The haircut is like our outward expression,” Colley said. “They may have had a previous negative experience with stylists kind of pushing them in one direction or the other based on what they assume the client wants.”
In honor of Pride Month, all haircuts at Code Micro Salon were free on Saturday.
The salon partnered with the Dress Code Project, a national organization focused on LGBTQ+-friendly salons.
“This event is the example that we want to set for ourselves and our culture in the salon,” Colley said.
That culture is one of acceptance and inclusivity.
“When clients come in they can just feel like relaxed and like they can ask for whatever haircut they want and they’re not going to get talked out of it or we’re not going to try to do it in a way that makes it look more feminine or masculine based on what we assume about the client.”
Code Micro Salon says it wants to continue the culture it created with the free haircut day.
