Oklahoma City Police aim to ensure safety year-round but say there is a spike in crime during the summer.
OCPD Chief Wade Gourley joined News 9 to give tips on how to stay safe this summer.
Gourley said one major way to stay safe is to lock your cars, as firearms and other belongings are stolen from unlocked vehicles.
"We've talked about it on our social media and put out the numbers of firearms that are stolen out of vehicles," Gourley said "If you're carrying your firearm, don't leave it unsecured in your vehicle; the majority of firearms that are taken out of vehicles are taken out of unlocked car."
Gourley also advised always being aware of your surroundings, preparing wherever you go, and securing your valuables when going out to events this summer.
