A new initiative is helping young drivers obtain driver's licenses faster, according to Service Oklahoma.

Service Oklahoma's new initiative, known as the "Sweet 16 Guarantee," allows drivers the opportunity to become licensed on the day they turn 16, with a few requirements.

Service Oklahoma CEO Jay Doyle said the initiative will build off of the existing requirements.

"You have to be sure that you've had your learner's permit for 180 days, you've had 50 hours of drive time behind the wheel," Doyle said.

Doyle also said drivers must have completed either a commercial driver school or a parent-taught drivers program, as well as a work zone safety program.

According to Doyle, a new bill passed by the Oklahoma legislature will change the required age needed for a learner's permit, lowering the required age from 15-and-a-half to 15 years old, giving teens more time to prepare.

"It gives you an extra six months to get those hours in to get your permit," Doyle said.
