Make-A-Wish Oklahoma granted a special wish Saturday night, bringing a local boy battling Leukemia together with his community and his heritage.
It was a charro-themed birthday party with Mexican cowboys, Mexican dancers, music, tacos and more.
“It’s so sweet to see him wanting to engage his culture and be connected to that,” Katie Iannazzo with Make-A-Wish said. “These are the kinds of wishes that we don’t get all the time but are so fun because they do involve the whole community.”
Make-A-Wish Oklahoma grants wishes to kids battling critical illnesses all across the state.
“We sit down with the child and say, 'The world is your oyster. What would you like?'” Iannazzo said.
Angelito, a now 5-year-old battling leukemia, lived his Mexican cowboy dream Saturday, thanks to Make-A-Wish and Oklahoma City's Hispanic community.
“Everything that is happening here today has been donated by this community,” Iannazzo said.
The party created unforgettable memories surrounded by heritage, culture, family and friends.
His mother Maria said the experience granted their family a new perspective.
“Thanks to Make-A-Wish, he was able to look at his treatment differently. That really gave him hope and got him excited for this," Maria said.
Angelito was a man of few words as he was soaking in every single second. But his gratitude shined through.
“Thank you all for being here,” he said.
Angelito will continue on in his treatment journey. His family said the motivation to get through his treatments is throwing another party to celebrate.
