High heat can impact people's health in more ways than one.

Pharmacists at OU Health said it’s important to take precautions, especially for those who take medications. Medications come with side effects and the sun can amplify those risks.

“Certain medications can cause you to overheat,” said Katie Thompson, director of inpatient pharmacy at OU Health.

Thompson said some medications increase the chance of dehydration during days when the heat infects the air.

“Such as antibiotics, antifungals; some anti-diabetic medications that cause you to have an increased risk for a sunburn,”  Katie Thompson said.

Even over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen can pose a risk for sun sensitivity in the high heat. Thompson recommends good habits like a sunscreen routine if people spend time outdoors.

She said don’t leave medications in vehicles because heat damages many prescription drugs. Thompson said patients should stick to a prescription’s schedule regardless of the weather.

“Take them as prescribed,” she said.

Thompson advised people to form habits to help mitigate any potential side effects.

“Go inside, take a break, make sure you are drinking plenty of water,” Thompson said.

Thompson said advice from the internet should be taken in small doses.

“Any type of searching on the internet should be done with caution,” Thompson said. “You definitely wanna talk to your pharmacist or healthcare provider.”

Family members should also learn what medications their loved ones take. Thompson said families should often check in on one another during the hot summer months.
