Robin Obert-McMahon has always been into fitness even competing in triathlons, right up until things started feeling a little off.
“I called my friend who is a doctor and I said something is wrong,” said Obert-McMahon
It was discovered that she was Type-1 diabetic, and things were pretty serious.
“They got me to the emergency room and my blood sugar was almost at 900, so I should not have been conscience at that point,” said Obert-McMahon.
Over time her health challenges would continue to be a problem.
“My doctor called and said she had met with all of my specialists, and I wasn’t going to make it,” said Obert-McMahon.
“I stayed up all night, I planned my funeral [...] I just said God, it’s your will,” said Obert-McMahon. She was at peace with news.
It was at a doctor’s visit that everything would change.
“She [the doctor] looked at her assistant and she said, she used to be a triathlete,” said Obert-McMahon. "That went through every core of my being, and I said I’m still a triathlete in here.”
After getting through her health challenges, Robin went against her doctor’s advice and came here to Healthy Living OKC to start working out again. Little did she know how much that decision would change her life.
“People thought I was crazy, at church they were like you cannot do this, and I said watch me,” said Obert-McMahon.
She started working out with her trainer Megan Burch. As she got better, there was another trainer that caught her eye.
“I thought he was nice [...] after a couple of times meeting him, I thought he’s really nice,” said Obert-McMahon.
The trainer that caught her eye was Mike McMahon, but he played it cool for the next couple of weeks.
“Well Mike was curious about her; he came to me and was asking about her.” said Burch.
“You know she’s a professional chef? I said tell me more,” said Mike.
It only took one date for Mike to lock in. “She won my heart right then and there, because there was a kindness to her,” said Mike.
He began training Robin, preparing her to once again compete. As she got stronger so did Mike’s feelings.
“That’s the one, that’s the woman you need to spend the rest of your life with,” said Mike.
So, on Thanksgiving Day, he proposed and the two were married in May of 2024.
“Yeah, she's pretty amazing,” said Mike.
With Mike’s training Robin competed in an aqua-thon in September, to her disappointment she took second place, however she competed with pneumonia and a torn rotator cuff. She anticipates being cleared by her doctors next week to resume her full workout and preparation for her next triathlon.
