For cancer survivors of any kind the journey can be long and tough, and getting support is key.

For breast cancer survivors who have support there, the bonds run really deep.

“What we do is, we provide support, care, comfort,” said Traci Cook, CFO for Breast Cancer Survivors of Oklahoma.

Breast Cancer Survivors of Oklahoma is a nonprofit organization run totally by volunteers. “Breast cancer is different, in that it is so personal, and it affects women in a very specific way,” said Cook.

Because they are all breast cancer survivors, they target the specific needs of women battling the disease. But they discovered there was one area they missed.

“We get a lot of calls for transportation over the years and that’s something we haven’t ever done in the past,” said Cook.

But that has all changed. “We got together and just decided to buy a Buber,” said Cook.

It’s like a free Uber for those battling breast cancer.

“The purpose of Buber is to be able to provide free transportation back and forth to appointments to those fighting breast cancer,” said Cook.

“They rallied around me and just really offered that support, ensuring that I got back and forth to my treatment,” said Janel Sander, who is being transported in the Buber car.

Because the drivers are also breast cancer survivors, the rides can become a time for bonding.

“She was just very grateful for having the ride and we talked the entire ride; I don’t think we ever shut up the whole ride,” said Buber driver Valerie Thomason.

At the rider’s request, the drivers will even go into the appointments with the riders, adding an extra measure of support. “Just women rallying around you to help you battle one of the toughest experiences of your life,” said Sanders.

“We are all survivors here supporting fighters,” said Cook.

Good news, Janel scheduled her ride for her final treatment later this month. To request a Buber ride call (405) 508-1611 or visit the Breast Cancer Survivors of Oklahoma website: www.bcsoklahoma.com
