Oklahoma City police released the name of the officer shot during a standoff in northwest Oklahoma City.
Police said 22-year-old Kavon Ragan shot Sgt. Joshua Scott on Tuesday before Ragan was shot and killed by other officers.
The home where the standoff occurred remained an active scene 24 hours after officers responded to a call involving Ragan pointing a gun at someone.
Signs of the standoff remained on the home police surrounded. The gunfire on Tuesday had neighbors on edge.
“It shocked the hell out of me for a police to get shot, you know what I’m sayin?” said neighbor Lamont Overstreet. “That’s really scary right there.”
The injured officer was taken to a local hospital. Oklahoma City Police Department’s Chief of Police Wade Gourley was able to visit him.
“I spoke to him yesterday and he’s in good spirits,” said Chief Wade Gourley, Oklahoma City Police Department. “We’re just thankful it wasn’t worse.”
Gourley said he also went to the scene near Northwest 36th Street and North Youngs Boulevard. He reacted to the tactical team’s response to the volatile situation with the armed suspect.
“He was even telling the officers and threatening them and continuing to fire on them while they were trying to negotiate,” said Gourley. “The fact that we have those armored vehicles out there allows us to do that. They’re safe within those armored vehicles.”
Negotiators were able to free five hostages during the standoff. The rescued included two women and three young children.
“Ultimately they wanted everybody in the house to come out and be OK,” said Gourley.
A resident two doors down from the scene said she watched as the tactical team re-grouped in her front yard.
Police eventually shot and killed Ragan after he refused to surrender peacefully.
“We know if they will injure a police officer there is no telling what they will do to the public as well,” said Gourley.
Nearby residents who were evacuated during the standoff have returned to their homes.
Police said two officers and a member of the U.S. Marshals Task Force returned fire during the incident. The two officers were placed on paid administrative leave.
