With the Fourth of July weekend approaching, Oklahoma officials are urging all residents to prioritize water safety measures.

The boat ramp at Guthrie Lake has been closed due to low water levels. City leaders in Guthrie have assured they are monitoring the situation closely and will announce when the ramp reopens.

Statewide, law enforcement officials emphasize several critical safety measures for those planning water activities. According to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, all individuals are required to wear life jackets while on any watercraft. Checking weather forecasts before heading out is also advised to ensure safe boating conditions.

"It's essential to stay within sight of others and avoid swimming, boating, or floating alone," stressed Officer Mark Johnson of the Guthrie Police Department. "These precautions significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure timely assistance in emergencies."

In addition to wearing life jackets, boaters are reminded to abstain from alcohol while operating watercraft. "Staying sober is not just a recommendation; it's a legal requirement aimed at protecting everyone on the water," said Johnson.

While the closure of the Guthrie Lake boat ramp is in effect, officials stress that these safety measures apply statewide and are not limited to specific locations. "We encourage all Oklahomans to be vigilant and take necessary precautions," added Johnson.

Further recommendations from Oklahoma officials include carrying emergency supplies like a first aid kit and a fully charged cell phone while on the water. Regular maintenance of watercraft and ensuring all safety equipment is in good condition are also crucial for safe boating practices.

For updates on water safety guidelines and the status of Guthrie Lake's boat ramp, residents are encouraged to visit the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation website or contact local authorities.
