A man is in the hospital after an alleged drive-by shooting on Friday targeted a home in southwest Oklahoma City.
The victim told police he was walking to his car around midnight when he was shot in the arm. Witnesses told police a black SUV drove past the home three times before stopping. They said the passenger opened fire on the home near southwest 29th and Western Avenue.
The gunfire woke up next door neighbor Roger Lively.
“I thought they were fireworks and found out Deon got shot next door,” said Lively.
Lively said by the time he went out to check on the commotion, his injured neighbor was already on the way to the hospital. Police found the victim with a non-life-threatening injury at a local hospital. The man told officers a black Cadillac Escalade pulled up and the passenger fired five to six times and then fled the area.
According to a report, police did not find shell casings or any evidence the home was hit by bullets.
“They were checking the walls with flashlights looking around the walls,” said Lively. “The back of the pickup that was sitting there. They were walking up and down the sidewalk.”
Lively was concerned for the children and other adults who live at the home.
“Thankfully, no one inside the residence was struck,” said Sgt. Dillon Quirk, Oklahoma City Police Department.
Lively says if the drive-by happened earlier in the night the shooting could have turned tragic.
“Kids were all out there,” said Lively. “Everybody was out there in the front yard having a good time.”
Lively is used to hearing gunfire in the area.
“You hear gunshots about every day,” said Lively.
But never next door.
“We have not arrested anybody in this case so far,” said Quirk.
Citizens can call Crime Stoppers at (405) 235-7300 if they have information about the suspect’s vehicle or other information that could help the investigation.
