Summer is in full swing, but there is still time to participate in your local library's summer reading program.

Readers can set a goal, learn something, and win prizes.

Kelly Dexter from the Metropolitan Library System joined News 9 on the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to talk more about the program.

Dexter said it is a great way to get everybody in the family involved in reading.

She said the program started 80 years ago to combat the 'summer slide.'

"Kids are home for the summer and not in school so they lose some of those skills and those educational milestones that they've hit," Dexter said. "Just a few minutes a day, 20 minutes a day, reading can help fight that."

Dexter said to sign up, go to one of the 19 Metropolitan Library locations in Oklahoma County, or download the Bean Stack app to qualify for prizes.

"Everyone who signs up gets a free short stack of IHOP pancakes, so at the very least, that's a great prize, but then there's all these other ones when you hit your goal," Dexter said.

She said adults can participate too, by squeezing reading time into their everyday lives.

"Put on that audiobook while you're driving to work in the morning or you're running or you're exercising because that definitely counts," Dexter said.
