Severe storms on the evening of June 25 caused power outages and damage across the metro, but those living in the Midwest City area received more damage than others.
Mid-Del School leaders believe the storm is to blame for a now structurally unsafe portion of the Midwest City High School roof.
"The long-term fix is we need a roof replacement," said Superintendent Rick Cobb. "That's something that we're going to get out and go through that full process on. The short-term fix is that we need to have somebody come out and fasten the top part of the roof to the structure."
In an emergency meeting on Thursday, the Mid-Del Board of Education approved up to $150,000 in emergency funding for the short-term fix which will allow students to safely occupy the building during the coming school year.
The district will bid out a full roof replacement later in the school year.
"Our goal over the next 34 days, until the first day of school, is to get that part of the building in a condition that's safe to occupy," Cobb said. "And we think there's a plan to do that. We meet with city officials tomorrow to discuss that plan."
Cobb does not expect any delay to the start of school.
