As the Republican National Committee prepares for its convention on Monday in Milwaukee, Oklahoma representatives are in Wisconsin are discussing security at the event days after an attempted assassination against former President Donald Trump.

Oklahoma House of Representatives Majority Floor Leader Rep. Jon Echols, a member of the delegation attending the conference, said they are expecting security to be more strict on Monday.

"We have been told to expect a little beefed up security that's been described as more stringent than TSA," Echols said. "I will say it feels safe here, it feels like... A good environment."

Additionally, Echols said they may hear from Trump on Monday, although it is still unclear who would serve as his running mate. Echols said traditionally, the conference reveals the vice presidential pick on Wednesday, but it is unknown what Trump may decide to do.

"We're now hearing almost all of the other Republicans that ran against Donald Trump are going to be invited to speak at the convention," Echols said. "Including Ron Desantis [and] Nikki Haley, so I think it's going to be a real unity-themed convention."

When asked about the change in inviting all of Trump's former Republican primary opponents, Echols said all decisions are at the discretion of Trump's campaign.

"The Trump campaign is in charge of the RNC, they're in charge of the platform," Echols said. "They're in charge of the rules, they really are running this convention. The addition of Nikki Haley is new... She was not speaking at the convention, now she is."

In regards to the upcoming election in November, Echols said Trump may have gained a lead after the attempt on his life.

"I think this is going to be a week-long commercial for President Trump... I think after what happened, this election is close to over," Echols said. "What he went through and the way he's responded, I'm expecting a great response, and I'm looking forward to voting for him as an Oklahoma delegate."
