State lawmakers say that their thoughts and prayers are with former president Donald Trump, after the assassination attempt over the weekend. State senators unanimously passed a resolution Monday to condemn political attacks.

“Father so many times we ask for peace in the world and we continue to ask for that,” said Sen. Roger Thompson, (R-Okemah).

State senators had planned to convene Monday for a special session, but said they wanted to take the opportunity to stand resolute against violence.

The resolution reads in part, “Whereas President Donald Trump was shot at and injured when a gunman opened fire during a rally in Butler Pennsylvania.”

“It was absolutely terrible still in shock even today, the fact that our president was close to assassination right here in America,” said Sen. Blake Stephens, (R-Tahlequah).

"Honestly I mean this is an incredible situation that we're experiencing right now as a country,” said Sen. Carri Hicks, (D-Oklahoma City).

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, say this is the time that the nation needs to stand together, regardless of political affiliation.

“We need to be willing to put partisan politics aside to make sure that we're taking care of the people that were involved in this situation,” said Hicks.

“We have got to learn how to love one another again and learn that we can have differences, but this is never ok, this type of violence is never okay,” said Stephens.

"It's about being human beings and the dignity of human beings, if somebody is in help you shouldn't say are you republican or democrat do you support Biden or do you support Trump,” said Sen. Greg Treat, (R, Senate Pro Tem).

Senators say they are continuing to pray for peace in the state and across the nation.

"I condemn violence of any kind and will continue to work towards making this a more peaceful state and a more peaceful country,” said Hicks.
