Natural Freedom Farm Spreading The Health To Food Insecure Children

It’s 16 acres in Chandler of fruit and vegetables for kids and families that need them.

“There are 250,000 children in Oklahoma that are considered food insecure and that means they don’t know when their next meal is coming and where that meal is coming from,” said Brooke Freeman, owner of Natural Freedom Farm.

The numbers were too great for Brooke and her husband Mike to ignore. So, three years ago the bought land and began planting

“We not only want to help those children by providing them with food, we want to take it a step further by providing them with local, fresh, healthy food,” said Freeman.

They call it Natural Freedom Farm, and as the fruit and vegetables grow, they take it to organizations for kids in need of it.

“We work with positive tomorrows, City center, and real single moms,” said Freeman.

They also provide opportunities for schools, church groups, and even families to come to the farm in Chandler and experience fresh produce firsthand.

“They’re eating raw onions, raw beets, they are picking turnips out of the ground and just eating them raw, and they are loving it,” said Freeman.

Not only do visitors get to taste the food, but they are also educated in the process of planting.

“They are putting seeds in the ground, and they are growing food that is going to help children that need fresh healthy foods,” said Freeman.

The hope is the more kids and adults learn about growing food, the more likely they are to make it a part of their diet. 

“It really is an experience that they have never had before,” said Freeman.

The farm is a registered nonprofit so donations and volunteer time can be reported.
