An unarmed man was shot and killed on Sunday at a home in southeast Oklahoma City, according to police.
Police said it was not clear what led up to the deadly encounter, but the accused shooter was arrested at the scene.
Initial reports were the shooting happened during a home invasion. However, investigators have since learned the victim was visiting the suspect and a woman who lived at the home.
A shooting call around 10 p.m. led Oklahoma City police to a home near Southeast 59th Street and the Interstate 35 service road.
“Responding officers found one person there deceased he appeared to have been shot to death,” said Msgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department.
Police identified the victim as 33-year-old Gary Westrick. Some neighbors said they initially heard it was a possible home invasion.
“Truthfully, I have unlocked. Got my gun, and unlocked it. I am keeping it handy just in case,” said Nikki Lippold, neighbor.
Lippold said it is unusual to have a crime scene on her street and even more unsettling to know someone died.
“This street has always been pretty quiet as long as I’ve lived here and I was really surprised,” said Lippold.
Police arrested the suspect 39-year-old Tony Servantes at the home. Police said for unknown reasons Servantes became angry at the victim and shot him.
“The victim did not appear to have been in a fight with the suspect,” said Knight. “The victim did not appear to be armed.”
There was a third person at the home, but police did not say if she witnessed the shooting.
Residents like Lippold were left wondering what really happened inside the home.
“We don’t know, and I don’t think we ever probably really will,” said Lippold.
Servantes was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on one murder complaint. He has not been formally charged by the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office.
