The Democratic Party has a new path with a new presumptive nominee.

Oklahoma Democrats prepared to take their next steps ahead of the Democratic National Convention.

So far, several top Democrats have pledged their support for Vice President Kamala Harris. A process must play out, but former Oklahoma Gov. David Walters says the change lights a spark inside his party.

David Walters spent Sunday afternoon reflecting on President Joe Biden’s decision to step down – a decision many deemed inevitable. Walters understands the pressure of politics.

“I can’t imagine how painful that was for him,” Walters said. “Found himself without a path to victory and had to make a really tough decision.”

Walters serves as a member of the Democratic National Committee, now tasked with setting a plan a month ahead of the Democratic National Convention in four weeks. Top democrats including Biden galvanized their support around Harris, the former California Attorney General and prosecutor.

“Frankly, I'm excited because I think it reenergizes our party,” Walters said. “I think we’ll come out of the August convention ready for victory.”

Oklahoma House representative, and DNC member, Rep. Cyndi Munson (D-Oklahoma City), said her party will officially choose the candidate to represent Democrats.

“The process still has to be in place,” Munson said. “Delegates can pledge their votes and then they still have to make their votes and then there is a time that a nominee is actually chosen.”

Harris also needs to choose a vice president. “Someone who can speak to the American people and share her vision,” Munson said.

Walters' experience in political office reminded him of the bigger picture.

“Their job is to serve the American public and to do it with grace and dignity,” Walters said. “That’s very important to maintain a viable democracy.”

Walters and the DNC issued a 28-day plan leading up to the DNC in August. Walters said Harris’s VP pick will be critical in the days ahead.

Harris raised at least $81 million for her campaign in the first 24 hours since Biden's announcement. Harris also has access to more than $250 million in campaign funds already raised.
